Our work
Building affordable homes with partner families in Southeastern Vermont.
A hand up, not a handout
Our volunteers and supporters help partner families build their own homes and purchase them with an affordable mortgage, gaining the strength and stability that come with a place of their own.

Frequently asked questions
Which communities do you serve?
We serve Andover, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Ludlow, Rockingham, Springfield, Weathersfield, and Weston. For other communities, please visit habitat.org to find the other affiliates operating in Vermont.
Do you do home repairs?
We are not accepting requests for home repairs at this time, as we are focusing our resources on building new affordable homes.
Who do I contact regarding land or property that Habitat may want to build on?
Land is one of the biggest hurdles to building affordable homes, and we're always interested in hearing about buildable lots or donatable property in our service area. Please call us at (802) 885-6440 or email infospringfieldhabitat@vermontel.net.
Who do I contact about a property Habitat is already building on?
For any question about an active Habitat build site (schedules, access, or concerns), please contact us directly at (802) 885-6440 and we'll connect you with the right person.
Do you give homes away for free?
No. Habitat homes are not given away. Partner families purchase their homes with an affordable mortgage, and they invest hundreds of hours of their own labor, called sweat equity, building alongside volunteers. Mortgage payments then help fund future Habitat homes.
Who can apply for a Habitat house?
Anyone who lives or works in our service area (Andover, Baltimore, Cavendish, Chester, Grafton, Ludlow, Rockingham, Springfield, Weathersfield, or Weston) and meets the selection criteria below may apply. Habitat follows a nondiscriminatory policy of family selection: neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing Habitat homeowners.
How do you qualify for a Habitat home?
Habitat homeowners are selected on three criteria: need for decent, affordable housing (for example, substandard or overcrowded conditions, or housing costs above 30% of household income); willingness to partner with Habitat, including 500 hours of sweat equity building or remodeling their own home, plus a required financial management and budgeting course; and ability to pay, meaning a 30-year, zero-percent-interest mortgage with taxes, insurance, and utilities escrowed into the monthly payment (a credit report and employment and financial disclosures are required). Contact us to learn about the application process.
